ROME – Giacomo Boni (Venice 1859 – Rome 1925), engineer, architect and archaeologist, is a key figure of the culture of the turn of the 20th century. (…) Boni was appointed as Director of the Office for the Excavations of the Roman Forum in 1898. Among other projects, he converted part of the monastery of Santa Francesca Romana- Santa Maria Nova into the Museo Forense, following a restoration project that was initiated by him in 1900 and executed by the architect Guido Cirilli until its conclusion in 1907. ROME – Photographs of the interior of the Museum of the Roman Forum created by Architect / Archaeologist Giacomo Boni between 1900-25. In the early 1900s, Boni had hoped to create not just a museum for the artifacts discovered then recently in the Roman Forum. But, he also hoped with international assistance he could create also a library, archive and school for the studies of archaeology and architecture of the Roman Forum. The idea was possibly derived from his past work as an restoration architect in the ruins of Pompei late 1880s and early 1890s.

ROME – for over two-decades (2000-20) the Roman Forum Museum has been closed to the public (as administered now by Dr. Alfonsina Russo, the Director of the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum in Rome [2018 onwards]) and as these photographs show, it is a real rarity to see the interior of the Museum and the amazing work Boni accomplished as an archaeologists in the Forum area, but along with Architect Guido Cirilli, the assistant- restoration / architect for the design, restoration and creation of the Museum of the Roman Forum (1900-12). G. Cirilli who later became the Director of the Scuola superiore d’architettura in Venice (1926-43 [now the IUAV school of Architecture and Architectural Restoration in Venice, Itay]).
