ITALY – 10,000 march in L’Aquila memorial of deadly earthquake. Demand reconstruction of city shattered by disaster, ANSA | ITALY (06|04|2015).
L’Aquila, April 6 – Some 10,000 people marched early Monday in memory of the 309 victims of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake while some renewed cries for justice.
The procession led to the city’s cathedral and the reading of the names of those killed when the ground erupted six years earlier.
Church bells tolled for the victims, their families, and those trying to rebuild their city shattered in the early morning hours of April 6, 2009.
Despite the bitter cold on the Easter weekend, residents carried candles and marched in memorial of the dead and in solidarity with more than 70,000 forced from their homes by the disaster.
“L’Aquila is a united community and committed to reconstruction, not just waiting for institutions to do it,” said Archbishop Giuseppe Petrocchi.
Regional Governor Giuseppe Di Pangrazio called it “a poignant moment, painful, heartbreaking, but you have to think about the future with positivity, with great strength and confidence”.
Some residents called for further inquires after an appeals court last November acquitted seven scientists and officials who were members of a Major Risks commission that met days before the earthquake but allegedly did not issue a strong enough warning.
Some have said that earlier rumblings in the area warranted a strong warning to residents before the quake.
The defendants said it was not possible to predict such an earthquake.
