Rome, the Domus Aurea. Update. April 2010.

Following the collapse of the tunnel section in the Domus Aurea, the scholars and politicians have flooded so too speak the Italian newspaper media with articles and comments about the overall problem(s) of the lack of funding, maintenance and planning not only for the Domus Aurea in Rome, but also the other monuments.

One of the current controversy’s now is just who(m) or rather deciding who(m) is responsible for the section of the Domus Aurea that collapsed? The City of Rome, Archaeological Supervisor – Dott. Umberto Broccelli says that the responsibility resides with the State authorities, while the State authorities – Dott. Giuseppe Proietti [recently succeeded Prof. Angelo Bottini as the National Archaeological supervisor of Rome, March 10th, 2010], states that the responsibility rest with the City of Rome.

Neither website specifically state who is responsible for the Domus Aurea? Even more confusing, is the recent financial statement of the Cooperative in Rome responsible for the maintenance of the Domus Aurea (ca. 01/2010):

“ARCUS SPA  Aggiornamento Piano Interventi Anno 2006 al 29.1.2010″

Which states the following:

[1.] “Interferenze archeologiche linea C della metropolitana di Roma−Progetto per portare in luce le interferenze e neutralizzarle (Palatino e Colle Oppio (Domus Aurea) [=] € 1,250,000.00 [Euro's] – Sovrintendenza Arch.ca di Roma di Roma – MIBAC.”

[2]. “Interferenze archeologiche linea C della metropolitana di Roma−Progetto per portare in luce le interferenze e neutralizzarle (Largo Argentina  e  di  Colle Oppio (Galleria delle Terme di Traiano, cd. Criptoportico)) [=] € 1,250,000.00 [Euro's] – “Sovrintendenza Comunale di Roma.”

According to this statement, depending on one interpretation, both the City of Rome and the MIBAC are both responsible for the DOMUS AUREA?

But, the more critical issue that needs to be addressed here is the safety issues, relating the Archaeologists (professionals / graduate students) who are currently working within this general area of the Domus Aurea. According to the Italian news (and a new photograph), several of these tunnels are utilized as a general storage area for artifacts, architectural elements, etc., artifacts and other fragments are stored here from different sections of the central archaeological area of Rome. For instance a recent photograph from the FACEBOOK page of: “ASSOCIAZIONE NAZIONALE ARCHEOLOGI [Italy],” shows two Italian archaeologists “Diletta Menghinello e a Ilaria Marrazza” working in one of these tunnels of the Domus Aurea (March 2010) [see link below]. Thank God, none of the Italian archaeologist were working inside the tunnel that recent recently collapsed within the Domus Aurea!

As of now, we will have to wait and see how the Italian Minister of Culture, Min. Bondi, along with  Dott. Giuseppe Proietti (SSBAR) & Dott. Umberto Broccelli (Sov.BB.CC.Roma), and the committee members of the ‘Commissario delegato per le Aree Archeologiche di Roma e Ostia Antica,’ are going to address the critical issues relating to DOMUS AUREA and the protection & conservation of Rome’s monuments?
